Life in Poetry... Texas

UPDATE: May 17, 2012

Hi all you BBC listeners! I didn't think anybody would find this blog from that radio documentary, but apparently I was wrong. I haven't even updated it in years, so I thought I should maybe post something from this decade.

Yes, Poetry is an awesome place to live, because it's so peaceful & beautiful.  Our place is like a retreat center in the woods. We would be considered some of the "city folks moving to the country," since we've only lived here since 2003. But I grew up in the Ozark Mountains in northwest Arkansas, so that's why I wanted to get out to the country. Now we have deer, wild hogs, and all kinds of other wildlife, right in our yard. Our dogs are so used to it all, they don't even chase anything anymore - they just lie there & watch.

Thanks to those of you who commented on my Poetry song! When Pejk called to ask if he could interview us, he asked if I had ever written a song about Poetry. I told him I hadn't, and he asked, "could you?" At that point, I only had a couple hours before the interview, so I guess that's why it's only about a half of a song! Maybe someday I'll write another verse or two. I do plan on doing a decent recording of it as is, so I can post it on here eventually.

So - maybe now that I actually have some folks reading this blog, I'll turn it into a Poetry blog & keep it current! I've posted a few new pictures at the bottom of this post, mostly just pictures from my iPhone.

Thanks for reading!
See you
Danny

No, I'm not kidding - I live in Poetry, TX. It's not really a town, but more like a community in the woods. We have a gas station & a feed store. It's at least 20 minutes to anywhere. But it has advantages... such as getting to live in Poetry TX. That's my house, and below are 3 more pictures I shot from the road on my way to work this morning. The temperature finally got below 60 last night, & the humidity was low - it was an awesome morning. So I decided to share it with all 4 of my readers...

I don't mind the 20 minute drive to work, at all. Or the slow satellite internet service. Or the lack of nearby stores or other conveniences. In my line of work (which is so public) it's really refreshing to be able to go home every night to what most people would consider a retreat center.

So, I have no deeper point to this post - it's just that I love the great home God has given me & my family - I wish you could all come see it sometime. All 4 of you.

Going home to Poetry (I LOVE that!) must truly be a breath of fresh air and a welcome decompression fro the "public." Absolutely beautiful - I felt relaxed just looking at your house.

I hope you counted me as one of your four readers! My job is nowhere near as public as yours (though the fruits of my work are, funny how that works out), but I completely understand the need to decompress and retreat from the world... I wouldn't even mind the wild animals next door...

Just found your blog through Anne's. I used to live in Poetry! My dad still lives out there... we had donkeys and cows in our front yard, and it was awesome. Now I'm in the city, but I know where to go when I need a retreat.

look at you - SIX readers? at least! i am sure there are thousands who are too intimidated to comment. i drove out to poetry once...i drive to clear my mind...and i got lost out there. it was fun. i grew up in towns of 4, 2300, and 12 respectively. so as much as the country is nice, i'd rather be on the 15th floor with a view from the middle of a city! before we were married, i had a studio in downtown KC and loved the noise, the sirens. i could have done without the murder next door and the suicide from the top though. c'est la vie.

i'll drop by your posh music suite sometime next week to give you the 411 on our move. :)

from the ghetto of mesquite.

Hello,

I left a post on p2wy's flickr site, but wanted to leave one here too.

We were in Terrell last week and found Poetry while looking for a rent house.

Does anyone know of any close by?

We will be moving within the next 4-5 weeks.

Thanks,
ddw

Hello, I live in the Philippines and have for 20 years but I am from Texas. We have a place in Poetry where we go when we are there for vacations and summers. My daughter and miss it and long for our next dose of Poetry. We were just surfing the internet for pictures of Poetry and found your blog. Then I said that looks like the guy at Lake Pointe. And it was! We also go to Lake Point when we are in town.

Anyway, I love your blog and would love to see more pictures. Poetry is truly so beautiful.

Hey there - I'm listening to you sing on a show about Poetry TX playing on BBC Radio 4 in Glasgow, Scotland on a Monday afternoon. Great!

Danny said...

Hey Glasgow - thanks! I didn't even know it was airing - I missed it! Hope I didn't say anything too embarrassing... I'll have to track it down & listen to it myself. Thanks for the comment!

And hey Philippines - sorry I never replied to you (2 years later). Maybe I should get back on this blog. If I do, I'll post some more Poetry pictures. See you around Lake Pointe some day, maybe...!

Yes, I've just listened to the same beautiful programme about Poetry, Texas on BBC Radio Four in the north of Scotland, where I live on a croft in highly valued solitude six miles from a bus stop, so I can imagine how you love it there. I liked your singing, and I liked that woman's very moving poem of protest. Good luck to you all.

o.k I live in the NW London suburbs, and work in central London - in fact the last place I worked possibly had more people in 1 open plan office (1,200) than you have in 10 sq miles, but I also heard the BBC4 broadcast yesterday and love what Poetry sounds like...

Danny said...

Hey Wayno
You could probably go out more than 10 square miles and still not have 1200 people! But it is a very peaceful place, and we love it. I've been to London a couple times, and would love to come back - it's a pretty awesome place also!

If you noticed all the birds singing in the section about the wheelbarrow right before the ending - I recorded those one Sunday morning on my deck & emailed it to Pejk after he came to Poetry, which I thought was cool. I'm glad you guys are enjoying the Poetry life, even if it's just on radio! Thanks for the comment.

Hi Danny

Just listening again to the programme by Pejk Malinovski on BBC Radio 4 and looking forward to hearing your song again at the end. Lovely - and what a beautiful place is Poetry! God bless.

Hi Danny, I too heard the BBC Radio 4 programme on 14th May. I loved your voice and your song so much, I had to get in touch. Do you have anything on YouTube?

Danny said...

Hi Anonymous - thanks so much!
You're right - Poetry is a beautiful place. And thanks for listening... again!

Hey Slinkymalinky
Thanks so much for listening & for the message. I don't have a YouTube channel, but I have a couple of videos of original songs up on Vimeo. One is a song I wrote & sang on Easter at my church, and the other is a song I wrote with a former American Idol finalist friend, Jason Castro. Here are the links:

I am moving from Austin to Poetry, Texas in the next 2 weeks. I was excited before I read your blog , now I can't wait to explore the beautiful countryside.

The broadcast just showed up on Audioboo and I loved it. Sitting in the West of Scotland in high winds melting the snow. Great song, time for the next verse to be written! Haven't been to TX since 2000, must change that.

Hey Cruise Missile
Sounds cold in west Scotland! Thanks for the comment, and glad you got to hear the program. And, since my last post, I have finished "Poetry in Motion!" I'll hopefully get a demo recorded sometime after the first of the year, after which I'll post a link on this blog.

Thanks again!
Danny
